Man jailed after around €12k of stolen North Face clothing found in his house in Tallaght

A man found with around €12,000 of stolen clothing in his house has been jailed for two years. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that on May 30, 2019 gardai began an investigation after a break in of North Face Ireland storage depot during which €45,000 worth of merchandise was stolen. On June 3, 2019 gardaí went to the home of Gerard Carey (43) in Tallaght with a search warrant. During a search they found North Face clothing in the house. Some of the items had been taken out of packing boxes and some other items were lying on the bed with merchandising tags still on. The wholesale value of the items seized was €12,000 and none of the other merchandise has been recovered, the court heard.

Man who made hoax calls claiming bombs were planted in Phoenix Park receives suspended sentence

A man who made three “hoax calls” claiming there were bombs planted in the Phoenix Park has received a fully suspended sentence. John Murphy (44) was homeless at the time when he claimed there were bombs at four locations in the park and threatened to “blow up all devices”. Murphy of Connolly Lodge, Buckingham Street, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to making a false report to emergency services on May 16, 2019. He has 21 previous convictions, including convictions for drink driving and public order offences. Detective Garda Alan Barry told Garret Baker BL, prosecuting, that on the night in question at around 10:50PM, Murphy made the first of three “hoax calls” in which gave his real name and his real mobile phone number.

US drops extradition request for Irish hacker who stole $2m in cryptocurrency

THE United States has dropped its bid to extradite a Dublin computer hacker for the theft of $2m in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies after his conviction here, the High Court was told today. With the withdrawal of the extradition request, Conor Freeman is no longer facing a maximum possible sentence of 108 years in prison after a sentence of two years and 11 months was imposed on him here. Siobhán Ni Chúlacháin, for the Attorney General, told High Court judge Mr Justice Paul Burns today that Freeman was already serving a sentence in Ireland that arose from the same offences and had not lodged any appeal.

Victim of clerical abuse gets suspended sentence for causing €100,000 damage to church

A VICTIM of clerical child sex abuse who caused €100,000 in damage to a church because he was upset by a “derisory” offer of compensation from the church has been given a fully suspended sentence. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was told that on July 26, 2017, Ian Kidd (54) got a letter from solicitors for the Catholic Church with a “final offer” of €30,000 for the abuse he suffered at the hands of a priest. He found this offer derisory and became upset, his lawyer Marc Thompson BL said. Kidd filled a can with €5 worth of diesel and went to St Agnes’ Church in Crumlin.
