2021 Richard Carver Award goes to Sarah Beauchamp, Honourable Mention to Vera Maloff

by Contributor on Monday June 28 2021 The Nelson and District Arts Council and Elephant Mountain Literary Festival are thrilled to announce this year’s recipient of the Richard Carver Award for emerging writers. Writer Sarah Beauchamp has been chosen by an arms-length jury to receive the award this year. Beauchamp’s letter of nomination highlighted the quality of her work, community involvement and support of the literary community. From the nomination letter: “She writes about experiences that are uniquely her own, yet familiar and touching to the reader. She explores her identity as an Indigenous and settler woman with tender honesty.”

by Contributor on Monday April 26 2021 Award-winning Nelson author, Diana Morita Cole, is a featured independent writer at this year’sn LiterASIAN festival: “GlobalASIAN: from Grassroots to Globalization.” LiterASIAN is Canada’s premier annual Asian literary festival, which began in 2013. The organization was founded by the Canadian poet, Jim Wong-Chu, who wrote Chinatown Ghosts.  This year’s festival will present the works of Asian writers across the diaspora. “The Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop has introduced a generation of writers to the literary world, and this festival sets a stage for both established and new literary talent to share their ideas and stories, as a celebration of their craft,” says Allan Cho, the current festival director.

Call for Nominations: Carver Emerging Writers Award

by Contributor on Tuesday March 16 2021 The Nelson and District Arts Council and Elephant Mountain Literary Festival request assistance in nominating emerging writers in West Kootenay communities for the 9th Annual Carver Award. The award, which comes with a $500 cash prize, will be presented at the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival in July 2021. Nominations must be for writers just starting in their careers who have had one to two books published, or an equivalent body of work published in anthologies or literary journals. The work must be creative, literary writing, including fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and writing for children and teens. Self-published authors are eligible.

The Runner | KDocsFF 2021 virtual opening night a 'seamless' success, festival to run until March 21

Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s esteemed social justice film festival, KDocsFF, kicked off March 12 with , a documentary about the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans in 1942. At 8:00 pm, film subjects George Takei and Satsuki Ina, director Abby Ginzberg, and Diana Morita Cole discussed the increased hate against Asian communities during the pandemic, what the festival’s tagline “Resistance. Freedom. Justice.” means to them, and answered audience questions. “This is my first attempt at a virtual film festival. And, of course, as the planner, you’re always worried about all the things that can go wrong,” says Janice Morris, founder and festival director of KDocsFF.
