Image: SUHAIB SALEM A former employee of the Ndwedwe municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal was arrested and charged by the Hawks for alleged fraud amounting to almost R500,000.  Members of the Hawks from the Durban serious commercial crime unit arrested Nkosingizwile Gama, 36, on Monday last week.  Gama was previously employed as a payroll administrator at Ndwedwe municipality. Hawks spokesperson Capt Simphiwe Mhlongo said between 2015 and 2016, Gama allegedly created ghost employees and used fictitious names to defraud the municipality.

Cpt Simphiwe Mhlongo of the Hawks, said: “It is alleged that two of the accused took out a life cover using an identity document of the victim. In September 2017, the two lodged a claim alleging that the insured person passed away. An insurance company forensic investigator smelt a rat and probed the claim. A case of fraud was reported at Durban North police station and the case docket was allocated to the Hawks for intensive investigation.” Preliminary investigations revealed that the person, whose identity document was used, is still alive and the wrong body was allegedly sent to the doctor through the arrested funeral parlour owner and the two accused.

Fake teacher bust after KZN Eduction Department uncovers false diploma By Zainul Dawood Share Durban - A FORMER KwaZulu-Natal school teacher who allegedly submitted a false National Diploma in Education was charged for fraud and released on R2 000 bail. According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI-Hawks), Sindiso Thusi, 36, appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Monday. The case was postponed until February 26. Thusi is a former teacher at Ntombiyodumo Primary School in the Umzinyathi District. Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the Durban Serious Commercial Crime unit arrested Thusi for allegedly submitting a false National Diploma in Education from North West University to the Department of Education in the Umzinyathi District.
