Birds killed by air rifles in country park

Summerhill Country Park A HARTLEPOOL country park will see increased police patrols after a series of incidents in recent weeks. Neighbourhood officers for the town have been made aware of a number of sightings of men with what are believed to be air rifles shooting wildlife at Summerhill. Numerous birds have been killed and Cleveland Police recently issued an appeal for information after crossbow bolts were found embedded in a nesting box. Over the Easter weekend, at least four adult males were seen carrying air rifles in the park in daylight hours, prompting a 999 response from police. Teams from across the force will continue to attend the area in a bid to deter such behaviour; these include Hartlepool’s neighbourhood officers, colleagues from the Dog Support Unit and from Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit.
