Durham Region Health Department reported three new deaths on April 18, two on April 19, and another two on April 20. This comes as the region continues to see record numbers of COVID cases since the start of the pandemic. The region reported 220 new cases Thursday, bringing the total active cases in Durham to 2,406. Of those, 1,686 cases are COVID-19 variants of concern.

Durham reported 259 new cases Wednesday, bringing the total to 2,073 active cases across the region. “Case and contact management continue to be key Health Department COVID-19 response activities to help control the spread of illness,” says Durham Region Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Kyle. He says case management begins with notifying positive cases and collecting information from them to determine potential risk to the community.

The board passed a motion at a special board meeting Monday night following the standing committee for correspondence to be sent to Durham Region Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Kyle and Durham Public Health “imploring them to prioritize the immunization of school staff and staff engaged in the direct transport of students.” Whitby Trustee Nicki Lundquist brought the motion forward during committee due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Durham schools.

As of April 4, 2021, Durham Region Health and Lakeridge Health have administered 106,052 vaccines at community and hospital clinics, and another 1,371 doses have been administered to residents through mobile clinics. “This is a tremendous accomplishment that we’re happy to report and we extend our thanks to Lakeridge Health for their ongoing partnership in the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to the community,” says Durham Region Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Kyle.
