Because it wouldn t be a Texas art event without a David Bates. His Burning Leaves from 1983, a decidedly Lone Star scene set among the swirling smoke and chopped wood and burnt-orange of late autumn, serves as one of the centerpieces in Heritage s May 22 Texas Art event. It features a man at rest, on break, his back bent against the barren tree upon which he has propped his rake. After more than a year, mariachis in North Texas are singing again The pandemic left band members almost jobless, but this weekend they’ll be busy at work. Alexia Quintero of Mariachi Rosas Divinas performs at Legacy Hall in Plano on Thursday, May 5.(Anja Schlein) “No songs, no music, no nothing”. That’s how José Antonio Laguna described the months of March and April 2020, when the pandemic hit North Texas. Laguna, director of Mariachi Mexicanísimo, has been a full-time musician since 14. For him, and for several other mariachi musicians, 2020 was a year of few performances. Although demand for mariachi music has increased this year, Laguna, who is from Guanajuato, Mexico, thinks his work schedule still won’t compare to what it was before the pandemic. Not until 2022.

Marriott opens Uptown - Dallas Voice

Marriott opens Uptown A new place to stay makes Oak Lawn even more of a travel destination The new Marriott on Fairmount Street in the Uptown section of Oak Lawn is a warm and friendly new addition to the neighborhood and the first new option in where to stay in the area in several decades. Multi-floor windows in the lobby and a patio along the street invite the neighborhood inside. A mural behind the check-in desk is made of salvaged wood reclaimed from older buildings in the area. Visitors to Dallas can get a great view of downtown from the fifth floor infinity pool deck. For anyone from Dallas who doesn’t hang out in Uptown, the area is unrecognizable from the days when Fairmount Street’s large homes had all been converted into antique shops. Today, Uptown is an extension of downtown divided only by Klyde Warren Park, Dallas’ very successful and always active deck park over Woodall Rodgers Expressway.

Gris’ pivotal contributions are the subject of the new exhibition “Cubism in Color: The Still Lifes of Juan Gris” at the Dallas Museum of Art.
