Student Composers Debut New Music The Only Way They Can On Zoom

Tetractys New Music Players perform student compositions online. Unique among composition competitions, the Jack Stone Award for New Music is the only national music competition open solely to community college students. Last year, the coronavirus pandemic hit just before Northwest Vista College, the sponsoring college, could invite the winners to hear their pieces performed live before an audience. And with the pandemic continuing its march in 2021, Northwest Vista College hosted the 2020 and 2021 winners online on March 23. The performance, by Austin s Tetractys New Music (Peir Shiuan Tang, piano, Matthew Armbruster, cello, Christopher Demetriou, percussion) featured pieces by six composer awardees. Blame COVID-19 for the restraints on typical yuletide celebrations that have upended gatherings and nearly stopped travel. It’s a lump of coal in everyone’s stocking.   But take heart. While interactions with friends and family are restricted and tightened budgets can blot out cheer, some celebrations, traditions and revelry can proceed – albeit with some caution, Dallas College experts say.   “Creating connections through our experiences with those we care about is valuable. But during COVID, that’s more challenging because of social distancing,” said Karen Cuttill, a licensed professional counselor at Dallas College’s Richland Campus. “In-person gatherings may be prohibited but connections can still be intimate over social media platforms,” she said.

Dallas police are asking for the public’s help locating an 83-year-old man with Alzheimer’s last seen Saturday afternoon in far northeast Dallas. Jesse Jackson is described as a Black man who is 5-5 and weighs about 150 pounds. He has gray hair and brown eyes, and was last seen wearing black sweatpants, a black t-shirt and a black jacket. Jackson was last seen around 4 p.m. in the 9900 block of Walnut Street, near Dallas College Richland Campus.
