Bringing the Arts to the Streets [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY] Thanks to students and alumni of the UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts, Thursday nights have become special once again in Downtown New Bedford. The college and its partners are offering free performances and exhibits every Thursday evening for the next ten weeks in the windows of the former Star Store building at Purchase and Union Streets. So wear warm clothing, bring a blanket, and a thermos full of hot tea and enjoy the show.

CARE Southcoast: Finding Homes for Animals [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY] CARE Southcoast is a no-kill animal shelter located in Acushnet, committed to finding good homes for the animals under their roof. That includes cats and dogs that have disabilities. CARE Southcoast President Ruth Marshman says the shelter depends on many community partners to help care for its animals. Marshman visited Townsquare Sunday this week and talked about the challenges faced by the shelter s all-volunteer staff in caring for its animals, including those who require expensive medical care. Edward Anthes-Washburn says the future is bright for the Port of New Bedford. Anthes-Washburn has spent the last 11 years working on the waterfront, the last six as Port Director. In February, he begins a new job with Crowley Maritime Corporation, a vessel management and energy solutions company headquartered in Florida. Anthes-Washburn says his primary focus will be to expand the company s footprint in the Northeast. The Port of New Bedford has often been described as the economic engine of the city s economy. That engine has been humming along in recent years with commercial development, shipping, commercial fishing and North Terminal expansion playing prominent roles.

Foley Fish: A Seafood Success Story [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY] There aren t many businesses that last through four generations, but that is the case with Foley Fish Company of Boston and New Bedford, M. F. Foley was an Irish immigrant who started the company in 1906 in Boston with a commitment to selling the freshest fish possible. That commitment has continued for more than a century with members of the Foley family remaining at the helm of the business. Facebook Photo Michael F. Foley, the founder s grandson, opened the plant in New Bedford in 1981. After retiring, he came up with the idea of honoring the family s history and the company s employees by writing a book.

Learning More About Paul Cuffe [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY] Spinner Publications in New Bedford has released a new book about 18th-century civil rights champion Paul Cuffe. It is entitled Paul Cuffe: His Positions, Partners and Properties. The authors are David Cole, Richard Gifford, Betty Slade, and Raymond Shaw Cuffe, who lived in Westport, was widely regarded as the wealthiest African-American in the country. He ran a successful shipping business and worked with officials to secure the vote for all black men in Massachusetts, long before the Emancipation Proclamation. Cole joined Townsquare Sunday this week to discuss Cuffe s impact and the new book. His interview can be heard here:
