Spinner Publications in New Bedford has released a new book about 18th-century civil rights champion Paul Cuffe. It is entitled
Paul Cuffe: His Positions, Partners and Properties. The authors are David Cole, Richard Gifford, Betty Slade, and Raymond Shaw
Cuffe, who lived in Westport, was widely regarded as the wealthiest African-American in the country. He ran a successful shipping business and worked with officials to secure the vote for all black men in Massachusetts, long before the Emancipation Proclamation.
