Sheriff Ron Abernathy over Tuscaloosa County Jail COVID cases

A group of citizens who say they are concerned about the COVID-19 situation at the Tuscaloosa County Jail marched Saturday with handmade signs and a list of demands for openness from the Sheriff s Office. The protest, held outside the county courthouse and the adjacent Sheriff s Office, comes nearly a month after the Southern Poverty Law Center filed a lawsuit against the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff s Office, claiming the sheriff had not complied with the Alabama Open Records Act. The lawsuit asks the court to compel  Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ron Abernathy to respond to the SPLC s public records request, submitted in late July, and the law center s multiple follow-up attempts to gain information. The public records request seeks information about the number of COVID-19 tests administered at the county jail, the number of positive cases, and the housing or cell assignment changes that have been made to further prevent the spread of COVID-19.
