If you can remember back before the world ended and the pandemic started (I know, it isn’t easy), one of the last normal things to take place, especially as it relates to the world of hockey, was the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline. That happened near the end of February last year, only a few weeks before everything shut down. It was perhaps also Tom Fitzgerald’s first serious event after taking over for Ray Shero as Acting GM, a job he has since taken on in a more permanent fashion.

Just before the game started, it was announced that Jack Eichel would be scratched for the Buffalo Sabres. He did not participate in the morning skate, and did skate during warmups - but was held out of the lineup. The Sabres announced it as a lower-body injury. Tage Thompson, brother of Tyce, got into the lineup as a result.
First Period
The Devils started off well, getting offensive zone time on their first few shifts. Jesper Bratt had the first scoring chance of the game about two minutes in on a backhand right in front of Linus Ullmark but did not convert. Johnsson nearly scored on a rebound off a Sami Vatanen slap shot a minute later.

For the first time in over 10 months, there is a month of New Jersey Devils hockey to review. I could be cute and just leave at that. The Coronavirus Pandemic continues throughout the world and there is no guarantee the Devils or the National Hockey League will complete the 56-games-in-fiveish-months season sprint in full. However, this is All About the Jersey and not All About the Epidemiology. The focus is on the Devils. This is about the first month of the season they just completed. It had a surprising retirement, absences, a major return, many debuts, a dramatic overtime winner, a strong start, and a not-as-successful end of January. A lot happened in Newark as the team began its 2021 campaign.

In the 2016 NHL Draft, the New Jersey Devils selected 12th overall. In the first round, they took Mississauga center Michael McLeod. In the second round, 41st overall, they decided to take his teammate and linemate, right winger Nathan Bastian. They had done a number for the Steelheads that year, McLeod posting 61 points in 57 games and Bastian had 59 points in 64 games. Two picks after Bastian went to New Jersey, Carolina took forward Janne Kuokkanen from Karpat in the Finnish Liiga. He had crushed the Jr. A league in Finland for junior players, posting 53 points in 47 games, and earned himself one game in the Liiga where he posted two goals. At the time, they all seemed like promising prospects who had potential to become NHL regulars, especially McLeod at 12 overall.
