TUOLUMNE COUNTY, Calif. Fourteen backpackers were rescued from the Emigrant Wilderness in Tuolumne County after getting caught in a severe thunderstorm on Wednesday.
Rescuers were dispatched after someone in the group activated a 911 personal locator beacon. The area the backpackers were hiking was caught in a thunderstorm that produced hail.
The hikers were all between the ages of 15 and 22, and rescuers said some of the teens were suffering from hypothermia and needed immediate evacuation.
Fortunately, Cal Fire was working a wildfire near Groveland, Calif., and released one of their Firehawk helicopters to the Tuolumne County Search and Rescue team (TCSAR).
Skiing At Dodge Ridge
Pinecrest, CA The ski lifts came to a halt Sunday at Dodge Ridge following a busy 2020-21 season.
Spokesperson Jeff Hauff reports that the resort received over 223 inches of snowfall this season, or just under 20 feet. The season kicked off on December 21 after a big storm system arrived ahead of the Christmas holiday. Things really kicked into gear during the last week of January when nine feet of new snow fell between the 24-29. Additional snow fell in February and March, with cooler than average temperatures.
Hauff says there was an uptick this year in new guests from the Bay Area and Central Valley as many ventured out in search of skiing and riding in the Sierra Nevada. This year also saw new COVID-19 protocols put in place.
Clearing Seasonal Mountain Passes
Sonora, CA Progress is being made clearing seasonal mountain passes ahead of what is expected to be a busy tourism season.
Caltrans reports the closure gate on Sonora Pass has now moved from Sno-Park to Eagle Meadows. Officials warn that there is very limited parking and opportunities to turn around on that section of the pass. The closure gate on Highway 4 Ebbetts Pass has moved from the west end of Lake Alpine to the east end of the lake.
As temperatures are getting higher, Dodge Ridge announces that this will be the final weekend of its 70th ski season. Meanwhile, Bear Valley will remain open through next weekend.
