It s been a tough year for everybody including for The Beaver County Times.
From personnel changes, layout adjustments and content variance to all that came along with working during a pandemic while also covering the details of the ever-changing status of COVID-19, it s been quite a year.
And yet, reporters at The Times and The Ellwood City Ledger pushed through, covering not only the pandemic but how it affected different communities, industries and individuals. Investigative reporting continued, municipal coverage pursued, and the county s award-winning newspaper picked up awards yet again.
The Times and Ledger netted eight total wins in the 2021 Pennsylvania Keystone Media Awards for this past year, landing three first-place awards, two-second place and three honorable mentions.

A sense of relief permeated Beaver County and southwest Pennsylvania Tuesday evening as area residents and politicians reacted to the verdict in the trial against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd.
Chauvin, 45, was found guilty on Tuesday of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The verdict sparked reaction throughout the country.
Ambridge resident John Thomas stood on the corner of Eighth Street and Ohio River Boulevard in the borough Tuesday evening holding signs that read Guilty x3 and know justice, know peace.
He said he hopes the trial verdict is a turning point in this country.
Sports injuries happen.
In high school, a sports injury can mean missing the biggest game of the year or sitting on the bench when college scouts visit.
Injuries also can mean a prescription for painkillers.
But since the height of the opioid epidemic, people like Chaz Januzzi are looking for alternatives to prescription pain medication.
Januzzi, a Beaver County native, is the director of sales and owner of Match One Medical Marketing Consultants in Fallston, and founder of the American Foundation for Opioid Alternatives. Match One provides electrostimulation devices as an alternative to opioids.
One of the products that Match One markets is a wearable device called the Sport-Z, which is largely offered to athletes who suffer from sports-related injuries.
As the weather warms up, folks are turning outdoors for solace.
Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, health officials continue to emphasize the importance of social distancing when possible. For many who want to make up for lost time with family and friends, and get outside, kayaking has become a popular pastime.
There are more kayakers than ever, said Mike Parker, communications director with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. People are itching to get out this spring, he said. Last year, we sold 40% more launch permits than we did in 2019.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Fish and Boat Commission has advocated for outdoor activities, saying activities like fishing, kayaking and others can be done safely.
