DANVILLE, Va. â COVID-19 cases in Danville-Pittsylvania County are much fewer than they were this time last year, but those few patients still admitted to area hospitals with COVID-19 complications are far sicker than the average patient was pre-vaccine era. For the past several weeks, our numbers of COVID-19 positive patients has fluctuated between zero to five patients across both campuses, said Sheranda Gunn-Nolan, chief medical officer for Sovah Health in Danville. While the overall number of patients being admitted is lower, these patients are much sicker than the patients we were seeing a year ago.
Since rolling out three key COVID-19 vaccine options in December, 60 percent of Virginians have received at least one dose and 53 percent are fully vaccinated. That number is only 44 percent in Danville and 42 percent in Pittsylvania County.
