Tarleton to honor spring graduates at Friday, Saturday commencement

STEPHENVILLE Tarleton State University will celebrate spring 2021 graduates with in-person commencement ceremonies May 14 and 15 at Memorial Stadium on the Stephenville campus.
Tarleton President James Hurley will preside over four ceremonies, beginning at 9 a.m. Friday.
Dates and times:
• 4 p.m. College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, College of Liberal and Fine Arts
Saturday, May 15
• 4 p.m. College of Graduate Studies
Social distancing must be maintained in all settings. Parking lots will be cleared after each session to make room for the next graduates and their families.

Tarleton commencement speaker living a legacy

STEPHENVILLE Kristen Peacock is walking in some very familiar footprints.
The senior nursing major from Stephenville is following her grandmother’s path into a career as a healthcare professional. A path that began at Tarleton State University.
Her grandmother was in Tarleton’s first graduating class of nurses.
“I was extremely close to her. We would be together in the kitchen cooking, and she was always telling me stories about being a nurse in Hawaii, College Station, Chicago. She would tell me story after story. I was thinking, wow, she got to do all these amazing things and make such a difference in people’s lives.”
Tarleton, Dallas College partnership rewards transfer students

STEPHENVILLE One of the fastest growing regional universities in the country and one of the largest community college systems in Texas cemented an agreement this afternoon as a national prototype to boost educational opportunities for transfer students who graduate from two-year schools.
As part of its Distinguished College Partnership, Tarleton State University will provide annual scholarships, from $500 to $2,000, to Dallas College transfer students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Awards will be divided between fall and spring semesters based on enrollment and will be renewable up to three years with satisfactory academic progress.
Tarleton program helps students who dropped out due to COVID-19

STEPHENVILLE A $750,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will help Tarleton State University boost workers displaced by COVID-19 and assist students who stopped short of completing their undergraduate degree.
The Texas Reskilling Support Fund Grant Program stems from $175 million given the coordinating board from the Governor’s Emergency Educational Relief Fund, originally part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020.
Grant money for those who qualify covers tuition and fees and will vary from $750 to $1,500 per semester (summer and fall 2021). Application fees will be waived for previous Tarleton students.

As a public administration researcher who conducts leadership training for law enforcement supervisors across the country, I set out to investigate what future police officers learn in basic training - specifically, whether they are taught the kind of public service skills that many people expect them to display on the job.
