MA’ALAEA (MAUI), HI – Pacific Whale Foundation president Greg Kaufman delivered a talk on “Eco-Friendly Whalewatching: It’s Not Always Easiest to Be Green” at a naturalist workshop that was conducted in Provincetown, Massachusetts at the Hiebert Marine Laboratory on April 24-26.
This three-day workshop was hosted by the Dolphin Fleet of Provincetown, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. The purpose of the annual workshop was to educate naturalist/science educators, interns, volunteers, and those directly involved with whale watch tours or research in the Gulf of Maine region. Few of us would anticipate feeling an emotional connection with a swarm of ants. But in episode three of A Perfect Planet, when a colony of fire ants build a raft using their bodies to survive flooding in the Amazon, only the concrete-hearted would fail to be moved by their resilience. As the raft sailed across the water, I sobbed.
Emotion is often close to the surface when watching wildlife programmes; something I do a lot. It goes hand-in-hand with my need to smell forest mulch, stare at lichen and stalk woodpeckers most days to feel alive. From being a child whose personality was rooted in The Really Wild Show and a magnifying glass, to a grown woman who will watch anything from Winterwatch to Netflix’s 72 Dangerous Animals to get a fix, these shows have always been a sanctuary: a source of wonderment and comfort. Cancale, France – Two dolphins were rescued on Jan 9 from Cancale, a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany, north-western France, after they were stranded by Europe’s strongest tides.
“I received a phone call from the firefighters at 9:30 am,” said Gabriel Gautier, director, AI lark Association, a wildlife conservation organization. “We are part of a network of organizations in France that are qualified to intervene when marine wildlife beached on our shores. So, when the firefighters received a call from locals telling them dolphins were stranded in the shallows, they contacted me.”
