Outgoing Canberra Health Services CEO Bernadette McDonald. In a message to her colleagues, Ms McDonald, who took on the role in late 2018, said she would be leaving Canberra and returning to her family in Melbourne. “As many of you would know, the past year has been particularly tough for me, not only dealing with the uncertainty and anxiety of the pandemic, but also having to spend large periods of time apart from my husband and children,” said Ms McDonald. “At one stage we were apart for eight months due to travel restrictions and my work in a high risk setting.”

ACT Health has gone live with its new booking system for its two COVID-19 mass vaccination clinics, using the MyDHR system rolled out in association with electronic medical record vendor Epic. Eligible Canberrans are being asked to sign up to MyDHR using their Medicare card to confirm their eligibility. An invite to book an appointment will then be sent within 24 hours of signing up, and the system also allows people to cancel or reschedule their appointments. MyDHR is the public portal face of the ACT’s Digital Health Record, which will be rolled out throughout the ACT’s public hospitals and community health centres in September 2022.

In the 2018‑19 Budget, the ACT Government committed $151 million to the Digital Health Record project, including a $106 million capital investment. In July 2020, global software company Epic was announced as the ACT Government’s partner in this project. Epic’s world-leading software will be rolled out across Canberra’s public health services, including hospitals, community health centres, nurse-led walk-in centres and our new walk-in health centres.

ACT Health will go live with its Digital Health Record in September 2022 in a big bang implementation that it believes will allow it to leapfrog the other jurisdictions to become the most digitally enabled health system in the country. The centrepiece of the DHR is what ACT Health CIO Peter O’Halloran says will be deepest and broadest implementation of the Epic electronic medical record in Australia, which will now also include Epic’s Beaker laboratory information system, its Radiant radiology information system and its patient administration system, the first time these modules will be rolled out locally.
