ROME, May 16 (Xinhua) Italy formally opened its borders on Sunday for restriction-free travel for visitors from some countries. While it appeared that few took advantage of the eased travel rules on their first day, businesses in Rome say they are ready.
Many streets, parks and squares in the Italian capital were full of visitors over the weekend at least by the standards of the coronavirus pandemic. But most of those out under Rome s cloudy skies were local.
As of Sunday, travelers from European Union (EU) member states, Britain, and Israel have the right to enter Italy without restrictions if they could show a recent negative coronavirus test, proof of vaccination, or they had recovered from the virus in the last six months.

Passengers from most EU countries to be welcomed back to Portugal from Monday
The portuguese interior ministry has confirmed that tourists from certain EU countries will be welcomed back for non-essential trips from Monday.
Under the new, lighter restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Portugal, passengers will still have to show proof of a negative PCR test 72 hours prior to arrival.
Restrictions will be lifted for passengers from the European Union, the Schengen Area and the United Kingdom, as long as their country of origin has infection rates below 500 per 100,000 people over 14 days.
‘Realistic plan’ may spell bad news for Clare airport
May 15, 2021
FEARS are growing that Aer Lingus won’t resume transatlantic services at Shannon until at least next year.
A document has been circulating, ostensibly an internal Aer Lingus one, which indicates that this will be the case.
Part of the document’s headline states “Realistic Plan” and it indicates that services from Shannon to Boston and New York won’t resume until 2022.
In recent times Aer Lingus has sought to develop new transatlantic services from Manchester, and it indicates that Manchester-Orlando and New York would begin in late July, while Manchester-Barbados would begin in October. A number of transatlantic services would also restart from Dublin this year.
