The company’s investment in these projects is worth $40 million

Drax has unveiled plans for the construction of three new biomass pellet plants in the US state of Arkansas.
The projects combined are forecast to produce approximately 120,000 tonnes of what they call sustainable biomass pellets a year – these pellets will come from sawmill residues.
The development of these projects, which is part of Drax’s strategy to increase biomass self-supply to five million tonnes by 2027, represents an investment of $40 million (£28.8m), the company said.
Will Gardiner, Drax Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “Through this investment, Arkansas will play an important role in combating climate change, supporting Drax to increase the amount of sustainable biomass we produce as part of our plans to pioneer bioenergy with carbon capture and storage.
Bioenergy and CCS could help the UK save more than £4.5bn over the coming decade
Achieving the net zero target without BECCS would cost the UK an additional £15 billion, according to a new report

The deployment of bioenergy and carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology at Drax Power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire, could help the UK save more than £4.5 billion over the coming decade, rising to £5 billion by 2050.
That’s according to a new independent analysis by energy consultancy Baringa, which estimates without BECCS at Drax Power Station the energy system would be subject to additional costs of around £4.5 billion to achieve the government’s fifth carbon budget.
Drax starts planning process to build bioenergy with CCS plants
The company has started the application to build BECCS units as soon as 2024

Drax has started the planning process to build its first two bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) units in 2024.
The technology, which is claimed to be carbon negative, is predicted to capture and store up to eight million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
The energy company must secure a development consent order (DCO) from the government to deploy this technology.
The first phase of the DCO application process includes a public consultation this month, when the public will be able to comment on Drax’s plans for BECCS.
