Eiffage, Vinci and Implenia to lead on €3bn tunnelling deals for France-Italy high speed rail

Work on the Turin to Lyon high speed rail link reached a major milestone this week with award of three contracts for the tunnelling work with Eiffage, Vinci and Implenia named as firms set to lead the work. Tunnel Euralpin Lyon Turin (TELT) has said that the three contracts, worth a total of €3bn (£2.58bn),  will deliver 80% of the tunnelling work on the new high speed rail link between France and Italy. It added that it hopes to conclude contractual discussions for the Italian end of the tunnels soon. The TELT project involves a 65km rail link between Susa in Piedmont, Italy and Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in Savoy, France with 57.5km of the line being built below ground, known as the Mont-Cenis base tunnel. In total 162km of tunnels will be excavated for the project.

The European Parliament said in a statement that lawmakers had given the green light to the updated Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, allocating more funds for transport infrastructure investments. The facility had been agreed between Parliament and Council in March. The fund covers the period from 2021 to 2027 and will finance projects in the fields of transport, energy, and digital technologies. It will ensure that essential Trans-European projects such as Rail Baltica, alternative fuels charging infrastructure and the roll-out of 5G coverage to important transport axes are finished on schedule by 2030.
