PERU Earlier this month, a drawing was held by Dirigo Elementary School in which two girls and two boys from each of the Pre-K-5 classes received a bike, thanks to the Masons’ Bikes for Books program.
This is the fourth year of the Bikes for Books program held by King Hiram Lodge 57 of Mexico, which supplied 28 bicycles and safety helmet..
Principal Charlie Swan said students in the seven classes read books over a three-week period. Each time participating students in the program read an age-appropriate book, their name went in a drawing. The more they read, the better their chances of earning a bike.

Voters from the towns of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru approved Tuesday’s Regional School Unit 56 $12.97 million budget for 2021-22 by a vote of 354-163 during their referendum vote on Tuesday.
The tally in each of the towns was: Carthage 27-8, Dixfield 120-35, Canton 84-34 and Peru 123-86.
The district held to “a 0% budget-to-budget increase” from this year’s budget, Superintendent Pam Doyen said at the district’s annual school budget meeting on May 11. During that meeting and vote, residents from the four towns approved all of the 21 articles brought forward.
In Doyen’s comments prior to the May budget meeting vote, she said that although the district kept to no overall increase from this year’s budget, certain increases in some areas such as employee’s salaries were “estimated at about a $155,000 increase.”

MEXICO It’s never too early to dream about what you aspire to be.
For three months this year, 40 fourth-graders at Dirigo Elementary School in Peru had the opportunity to do that.
Teacher Holmquist said students first learned about essay writing, then from February through April watched Zoom aspirations workshop sessions with Bob Stuart, program director for the nonprofit Maine College Circle. The organization teaches students to understand the value of continued education beyond high school and helps them explore their opportunities.

DIXFIELD Thirty-five voters unanimously approved Regional School Unit 56’s annual budget Tuesday evening at Dirigo High School.
There was no discussion from residents of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru on the 21 warrant articles read by moderator Dave Duguay of Byron.
The $12.97 million budget for 2021-22 is the same amount as last year, Superintendent Pam Doyen told voters.
