THE Government is to be urged to announce a decision over whether local elections should go ahead in May. Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for resources Councillor Charles Johnson said he would write to the Government asking it to end uncertainty over whether elections for the Tees Valley Combined Authority Mayor and Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Election would be held on May 6. As the elections were postponed last year, the votes will decide who takes the roles for the next three years rather than usual four-year terms. Last month the Prime Minister told MPs plans for elections in May remained “under review” amid concerns that practicalities could multiply due to voters receiving more than one polling card. The Government has already been stated that those volunteering as polling staff would be safeguarded by plastic screens, but there are concerns over some council’s abilities to attract sufficient numbers of the officials as the majority of the
