The demand for housing in Texas remained strong despite the winter storm in February and the pandemic, said Marvin Jolly, chairman of Texas Realtors. With a low supply of homes for sale, though, prices in most areas have gone up significantly, and competition among buyers has increased as well. During the first quarter of this year, 84,464 homes were sold in Texas, jumping 10.1% compared to the first quarter of 2020. One-third of homes sold were in the $200,000-$299,000 price range, the largest percentage of any price range.

As home values rise, the Lone Star state is still accessible to entry-level buyers. Even in the state’s hottest markets, like Austin, median home prices are still reasonable compared with many states, at around $350,000, according to third-quarter 2020 data from the Texas Quarterly Housing Report. Despite affordable home prices, coming up with a down-payment or qualifying for a mortgage can still be challenging for many families. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, or TDHCA, has several options for first-time homebuyers to overcome these hurdles. It s important to note that the people who have not owned a home in at least three years qualify as first-time homebuyers for TDHCA programs.
