AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today provided an update from the Alternate State Operations Center on the severe winter weather that is impacting the State of Texas. The Governor noted that snow and ice are expected throughout Texas for the next few days and ultra-low temperatures will linger throughout the upcoming week meaning that many road closures and extremely dangerous conditions are expected. The Governor also announced that he will request a Federal Emergency Declaration from the White House to make additional resources available for communities impacted by this weather event.
"The severity of the cold weather that is about to be experienced in the coming days is unprecedented in Texas history, we need people across the state to get ready for the extremely harsh conditions that are coming," Abbott said.

For the third day in a row in the Austin area, a wintry weather forecast is creating icy road conditions Saturday.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began to pretreat bridges and overpasses on major Austin roads on Wednesday in preparation for the expected icy conditions. Even so, dozens of crashes have been reported throughout the area since Thursday morning.
Because the surface temperatures are so cold, officials are warning about a thin layer of ice that has formed on many roads due to the drizzly weather. This means that all roads, not just overpasses and bridges, are potentially dangerous.
