Texans who buy personalized license plates have put $100 million into state tax rolls

Dec. 23 Texas motorists have bought nearly 500,000 specialty license plates since 2009, which generated about $100 million for the state s general revenue fund, officials from the state s plate vendor said.
The vendor is My Plates now sells 450 variations of specialty plates on behalf of the state. Many of the plates feature the logos of colleges charities and scholarships, many of which benefit from a portion of the money spent on the plates.
Plates start at $30 a year on top of the taxes all other car owners without specialty plates pay and additional personalization can be included for $40 a year and up. Some military plates and others available without charge to a limited number of Texans also can be ordered on the site.

You might need to renew your vehicle registration soon as the temporary waiver of certain title and registration requirements issued by Gov. Greg Abbott ends April 14, 2021. The waiver was enacted March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before renewing, Texans will need to acquire a passing vehicle inspection at a state vehicle inspection station of their choice.
“It is not necessary to wait until the deadline to complete any overdue transactions as motorists have several renewal options,” reads an emailed statement from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

The waivers on expiration dates for Texas Department of Public Safety-issued driver licenses and identification cards and Texas Department of Motor Vehicle-issued title and registration requirements are set to end in April.
Governor Greg Abbott’s office granted the waivers in March for driver licenses, commercial driver licenses, commercial learner permits, ID cards and election identification certificates that expired on or after March 13, 2020. A few days later, he granted waivers for expired vehicle registrations.
Those waivers will no longer apply after April 14, 2021. Those affected are encouraged to complete renewals by that date.
