Update, 7 p.m. Friday: Detroit Police Chief James Craig, reportedly planning to announce his retirement Monday, has been meeting with Republican leaders as he prepares to challenge Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2022, Politico reports. Craig has spent recent days meeting with Ron Weiser, chair of the Michigan Republican Party, and has spoken to Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, chair of the Republican Governors Association, the publication says.
Friday afternoon post: Detroit Police Chief James Craig plans to announce his retirement on Monday and is considering a run for state office, possibly governor, Detroit media outlets report Friday.
Duggan is a Whitmer supporter and will appear alongside Craig at the retirement announcement.
“I’m a lifelong public servant,” Craig said. “I want to continue to serve.”
Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser reportedly acknowledged that he spoke with Craig and other potential contenders.
“I think he would make a fine candidate, should he choose to run,” Weiser said.
If he were to win the Republican primary, Craig would be the second black person to be on a general election ballot for governor as a Republican. Former Wayne County Executive William Lucas ran in 1986 but lost to Democrat James Blanchard.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig is expected to announce his retirement at a Monday press conference, followed later by his intention to run for governor, according to multiple media reports.
A source close to the chief, who became the top cop in Detroit in 2013, told the Detroit News on Friday, May 7 about Craig’s plans.
Craig, 64, was appointed chief by an emergency manager.
He took over while the police department was under a federal consent decree over accusations of unconstitutional conduct, including using excessive force. The federal oversight was dropped in early 2016 under Craig’s leadership.

The news comes from a source close to the 64-year-old chief. A news conference has been scheduled for Monday.
The expected announcement comes as rumors swirl that Craig could run for office, possibly challenging Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Sources are also telling 7 Action News Craig is evaluating a run for the office.
