The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan by Kevin Kwart, lists the city of Detroit, Detroit Police Sgt. Timothy Vernon, Officer Stephen Anouti and three unnamed officers as defendants. It seeks a minimum of $75,000 in damages in addition to attorney fees and other costs.

Legal observers sue Detroit for police brutality, Civil Rights violations during protests By FOX 2 Staff The five legal observers from the National Lawyers Guild, announced the lawsuit downtown on Monday.  Without any lawful justification or excuse, my clients were viciously attacked by Detroit police officers for no other reason than them being legal observers, said an attorney for the plaintiffs David Robinson.  The suit alleges that plaintiffs Emma Howland-Bowlton, Shannon McEvilly, Marie Reimers, Sara Habbo, and Clarissa Grimes were subject to unlawful arrest, violence, and injuries at the hands of the Detroit Police Department while legal observing nonviolent protests throughout 2020.

Legal observers allege police used excessive force against them

Five legal observers with the National Lawyers Guild are plaintiffs in a complaint filed this month and amended Monday against the city of Detroit and the police department for injuries incurred during summer protests sparked by the death of George Floyd. The complaint alleges that the observers were subjected to wrongful force from police, including the deployment of tear gas and batons, while attending protests in Detroit throughout the summer. Observers serve as neutral watchers who ensure activists are fulfilled in exercising their First Amendment right. Without any lawful justification or excuse, my clients were viciously attacked by Detroit police officers for no other reason than them being legal observers, said David Robinson, one of the attorneys from the guild representing the plaintiffs.
