COVID-19 infection rates differ by neighborhood across Denver

A short drive makes a big difference A few comparisons between neighborhoods are made throughout the report. Still, one that sticks out to researchers is comparing the Westwood and Platt Park neighborhoods - separated by just under 5 miles.  The Westwood neighborhood s Southwest area had a little more than two and a half times of COVID-19 cases than the average of the analyzed area.   According to the report, it s also ranked among the five census tracts with the most non-English speakers and people of color.

All along the Front Range during the pandemic, demographics drew lines between sickness and health.   Longtime Denver physician Dr. Terri Richardson, with the Colorado Black Health Collaborative, said troubling trends emerged in the earliest days of the pandemic. “Everything, you know, it goes along the social, economic and people of color lines,” said Richardson, a recently retired internist with Kaiser Permanente. “The stories are when it was the COVID infections and testing, when it was a vaccine, the maps all look the same. You could have just superimposed all the maps and they looked the same.”
