CHUM Looking for Supply Donations for Those in Need

Fox21Online May 25, 2021 DULUTH, Minn.– CHUM wants to remind the community that they need donations to support the homeless community they help as we head into the summer months. CHUM saw a staggering 589 people staying in its warming and homeless shelters just from November through the end of March. Now, many of those people are living outside, as the weather warms up, so CHUM is asking for tents, tarps, sleeping bags, and batteries. “With the weather, summer weather, spring weather, the majority of people are going to choose to be outside, just because they don’t want to be in a crowded shelter,” Deb Holman, the Street Outreach Coordinator at CHUM and the Human Development Center, said.

Volunteers, City Crews Clean Up Homeless Encampment

Fox21Online April 1, 2021 DULUTH, Minn.– A massive cleanup effort is underway in Duluth from what’s left of a homeless camp there. “We need a solution, we don’t have the housing right now, the numbers are higher than ever and I could foresee people just coming back to this spot,” said Chum Outreach Coordinator Deb Holman. Last October, groups of people experiencing homelessness in Lincoln Park were evicted from a section of the hillside along Mesaba Avenue and West Superior Street because of health and safety reasons. The cleanup has not been easy but some Duluthians have stepped up to the challenge.

Our people are dying very young It s wrong, it s unjust, and it s an epidemic we ve accepted

And as the coordinator of the Chum Warming Center, he s excited about the political will he says is behind a permanent, 24-hour warming center he hopes will be up and running by next year. Thanks to a network of supports, Joel says he s confident that when people leave the Warming Center in the morning, they have another place to go. But he wants people to know that not only is -20° deadly to people who are homeless, so is 32° and wet. or 100° when you have limited access to water.

Help needed as warming shelters fill up during cooler weather

Alejandra Palacios Created: January 27, 2021 05:31 PM Northland homeless shelters are seeing more encampments throughout the community and shelters are also starting to fill up as people look for a warm place to stay safe. Places like the Rainbow Warming Center, CHUM, and the Ruth House in Superior are doing everything they can to help. Today is the annual Point in Time Count, where all shelters across St. Louis County will be counting overnight guests to help better understand homelessness in the community. It s not a choice that we made or wanted. We are just dealing with it the best way we can. There s other people out there that are homeless that don t have as much as we have. We are lucky that we have a heater and stuff, said Sharon Norris, a veteran who is homeless in Duluth. She lives in a encampment she built with a friend in West Duluth.

Duluth to offer better access to hygiene for homeless people

Duluth s Damiano Center will install six portable lavatory units. Written By: Peter Passi | × The Damiano Center Executive Director Seth Currier locks the door to one of the six separate shower/bathroom units of a new $68,000 trailer Wednesday. After last-minute details are taken care of, the trailer will be available for homeless people to use. (Steve Kuchera / skuchera@duluthnews.com) It s the little things, like a hot shower and the chance to freshen up that can make a big difference in the quality of life for a person experiencing homelessness. That s why public hygiene facilities have been high on the wish list for homeless advocates in Duluth for a long time. And the Damiano Center, at 206 W. Fourth St., is just days away from finally being ready to fulfill that need.
