On a stretch of Route 1 famous for its kitschy landmarks, the former Karla’s Shoes building stands out as an unwelcome sight for many marked by its broken windows and graffiti-strewn exterior.
“We’re the laughingstock around when people drive by and see it,” Selectman Debra Panetta said. “Why can’t we do something about it?”
Panetta has been banging the drum that steps should be taken to address the boarded up building that she believes constitutes a public safety threat due to its ramshackle condition.
“It’s a huge safety concern because it’s so dilapidated,” Panetta said.
The latest food/necessities drive coordinated by the town proved to be the most successful yet.
Volunteers who helped organize the drive at the Saugus Senior Center on March 6 were thrilled to see the amount of food and essential items that people dropped off.
Boxes overflowed with nonperishables, toiletries and other necessities that were brought to the Saugus United Parish Food Pantry and Senior Center. It was the fourth drive spearheaded by the Board of Selectmen and Town Manager Scott Crabtree.
“It was our biggest one by far,” Selectman Debra Panetta said. “I was overwhelmed by how much food was dropped off. People were so generous, it really touched my heart.”

Elected officials and Planning Board members have expressed concern over Caddy Farm, LLC’s application to create an extension off Warden Street to access a proposed development on 4 acres in town.
Caddy Farm, LLC is seeking approval of a definitive subdivision plan to extend Rodin Way from Warden Street.
Peter Ogren of Hayes Engineering explained that a subdivision would provide the required frontage for the 3.92 acres under Caddy Farm, LLC’s control to become a developable piece of property.
Planning Board member Dorothy Poppe said she didn’t believe the subdivision application contained enough details about the proposed use for town departments to determine the proposed subdivision’s impact.
