Vaccine clinic has 170+ openings
Despite a winter storm that delayed Taylor County’s 500-dose allotment of the COVID-19 vaccine, the local health department’s mass vaccination clinic set for today (Friday) at Forest Capital Hall is expected to go according to plan.
Icy roads and power outages across the country delayed some 200,000 Moderna vaccines scheduled to arrive in Florida on Tuesday, Feb. 16, forcing health departments across the state to cancel vaccine appointments.
However, the Taylor County Health Department (DOH-Taylor) had more than 300 unused doses from previous clinics available to give out today.
“Luckily, we are not having to call and cancel people. We have enough to cover both the first and second doses scheduled for today,” DOH-Taylor Operations Manager Martine Young said.
Health Dept. to begin giving COVID vaccine
After receiving a shipment of 500 doses, the Department of Health-Taylor (DOH-Taylor) will begin administering the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to Taylor County senior citizens next week.
The free vaccines will be offered by appointment only to individuals who are 65 years of age or older throughout the month of January, with the first appointments scheduled for Tuesday, January 5.
Previously-available dates included Jan. 5, Jan. 6, Jan. 8, Jan. 12, Jan. 13 and Jan. 15, however, due to the limited number of slots filling up quickly, DOH-Taylor is currently working to expand appointments beyond Jan. 15.
With only 60 appointments available per day, interested individuals are encouraged to call DOH-Taylor at (850) 584-5087 (press 2 for medical services) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to check availability and schedule an appointment.

First doses of COVID vaccine distributed to parts of Florida
Florida has been allocated 179,400 doses from the first shipment of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, which received emergency federal approval last week.
The first doses were allocated to front-line healthcare workers at several large state hospitals and for distribution to at-risk populations in long-term care facilities.
Additionally, as part of a vaccination pilot program, some of the very first vaccine doses were sent to health departments for distribution to first responders and healthcare workers in Broward and Pinellas counties.
As additional shipments are made available, the state’s third priority will be elderly populations.
