COVID-19 vaccinations are expected to move into the next phase in February. Nearly eight hundred Delaware County residents have been vaccinated for COVID-19 so far in the first phase – Phase 1A – including healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents and staff. And Delaware County Public Health Coordinator Charity Loecke says the second phase – Phase 1B – will open the vaccine to more people and that will be getting underway no sooner than February 1 st. Details on Phase 1C – which is expected to include ages 65 and older – is being discussed by the Iowa Disease Advisory Council this week. And vaccine distribution to the general public will come after that, likely by the middle of the year.

Delaware County Public Health will begin moving to the next phase of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in February. Phase 1A vaccinations have been going on since late December, with healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents and staff getting vaccinated. Phase 1B will begin no sooner than February 1 st. Those priority populations in Phase 1B include anyone age 75 and older, as well as populations vulnerable to high risk of exposure of severity of illness – that includes people with disabilities living in home settings who are dependent on staff and the staff who take care of them, incarcerated individuals and correctional facility staff, first responders and teachers, school staff and daycare providers.

COVID-19 vaccinations are going on right now in Delaware County for a select group of people, but health officials say they’re not sure yet when vaccines will be available for the general public. It’s a common question they’re getting lately – when and how will the public learn when the COVID-19 vaccine will be available for everyone? Delaware County Public Health says they are currently vaccinating those identified in the Phase 1A priority population of healthcare personnel and long-term care residents and staff. As more COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, Iowa’s Infectious Disease Advisory Council will review guidance issued by the CDC’s advisory group to further prioritize populations to receive the vaccine. They are currently reviewing recommendations for the priority populations for Phase 1B and 1C. At this time, Delaware County does not have details of what these recommendations may be.
