The 65-year-old had shot himself, the police said.
As the agitation against the new agricultural laws entered its 21st day, a 65-year-old farmer committed suicide at the Singhu border protest site on Wednesday, saying he could not bear to see the ordeal of the farmers .
The incident spurred fresh calls from the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for repeal of the three farm laws.
The deceased has been identified as Baba Ram Singh of Singhra village in Nissing area of Haryana s Karnal district.
The All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee on Wednesday said any panel such as the one the Supreme Court planned to set up to resolve the farmers’ agitation would be useful only after the three new farm laws were withdrawn.
The apex court had earlier in the day set in motion efforts to form the committee, issuing notices to the Centre and eight farmers’ organisations. But having decided at the outset against moving court for repeal of the farm laws, the protesting unions appeared wary of the proposal.
However, the farmers lauded the court’s remarks on the government’s handling of the agitation as a “moral victory”.
Chandigarh: The body of Baba Ram Singh, the Sikh priest who committed suicide by shooting self at Singhu border of the national capital Wednesday in protest against the Centre’s farm laws, was kept in Nanaksar Gurdwara in Singhra village in Haryana’s Karnal district Thursday for public homage.
The cremation will be held Friday.
A large number of his followers, largely from Haryana and Punjab, have started assembling at the gurdwara since early morning. As a preventive step, the police have made special security arrangements there.
The 65-year-old ‘sant’ left a suicide note which states that he couldn’t see the ordeal of farmers who are sitting on the outskirts of the national capital protesting against the farm laws.
