Remark comes after 2-day conference
Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday said that the Delhi government will emphasise on public participation to reduce air pollution and will fight it as a “mass movement”.
The Minister made the comment after a two-day long conference on measures to be taken to reduce air pollution in the city before the onset of winter.
“The Delhi government will fight against air pollution as a mass movement for which we will explore every possibility. The government will focus on changing the mindset and behaviour of people,” Mr. Rai said.
Delhi government, CPCB, DPCC told to take necessary action
Following a plea alleging pollution due to non-removal of garbage from a residential area in Karol Bagh, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the joint committee comprising officials from the Delhi government, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to look into the plea and take necessary action.
A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said: “The ‘dhalao’ system currently in use in Delhi needs to be compliant with [relevant] rules. To ensure this, we direct a joint committee of Secretary, Urban Development, Delhi; CPCB; DPCC and local bodies in Delhi to hold a joint meeting within one.”

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has issued environmental damage compensation (EDC) worth ₹22.1 lakh in March for violations, according to authorities.
Most of the EDC was charged for violations of dust control measures at construction sites, causing air pollution, officials said.
Also, following inspections, the DPCC has issued show-cause notices to 67 industries in Libaspur for operating without consent after receiving complaints of pollution in the area.
The industries have 15 days to respond to the notices, following which further action, including closure, can be taken.

Agriculture Minister Gopal Rai said that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) under the Central government has not opened a single counter for wheat procurement in Delhi, but is making false claims of purchasing the crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP) from April 1.
“Despite three letters of plea addressed to the FCI, it has not opened its wheat procurement counters, forcing the farmers to sell their wheat. The Central government determines the MSP and the FCI purchases, but the BJP is falsely accusing the Delhi government of not buying wheat at MSP,” Mr. Rai said.
Responding to claims, Delhi BJP’s Kisan Morcha president Vinod Sehrawat said that it is “sad” that Mr. Rai is playing “dirty politics” on sensitive issue such as purchase of wheat at MSP in Delhi.
