Google restricts Android apps from seeing other installed apps

Stop spying on each other on April 6, 2021, 7:34 Recap: In Google s continuous effort to upgrade its privacy and security policies, the company is now limiting the use of broad app visibility to see which other apps are installed. Starting May 5, Google will only allow the apps that meet specific requirements to see which other apps are installed in a device. In Google s announcement of the upcoming changes to the Developer Program Policy, the company stated only select apps will be allowed to use the QUERY ALL PACKAGES permission a.k.a. broad app visibility. Those apps must be targeting an API level 30 (Android 11) or more, and their proper functioning must be dictated by the awareness of other apps. In case an app can run with a more targeted scoped package visibility declaration, developers should stop using the QUERY ALL PACKAGES permission.

Apps Can Spy Other Apps On Your Android Phone, Google To Finally Block This Access

TechShout - Apr 6, 2021 Are you aware that any single app on your smartphone can see every other app that you have installed on your device, thus accessing sensitive information like dating preferences, banking information, political affiliation and password management etc? Google has announced to change this system on its Play Store from May 5. In an update, Google has said that app developers will have to provide a solid reason for why the tech giant should let them access other apps on users’ smartphones, reports arstechnica. Currently, Android 11 apps that request the “Query All Packages” permission can see the full list of apps you have stored on your device.
