Readily available HIV testing and treatment has not yet shaped the sexual relationships of women in South Africa, writes Dr Lario Viljoen from the Desmond Tutu TB Centre in a doctoral-based opinion piece published in

There are currently more than 7.9 million people living with HIV in South Africa and it is estimated that close to 4500 more get infected every week. Since HIV is transmitted predominantly through sex, prevention programmes are mostly designed to reduce the riskiness of sex or of passing on the virus during intercourse. Unsurprisingly, the intimacy and relationship dynamic context in which sex happens remains underexplored.
