The Austin area has battled through the recent controversy over the University of Texas at Austin s alma mater, The Eyes of Texas. Concerns regarding its racist formation and debate as to whether it should still be sung at school events have been raised, and verbal battles have cropped up between alumni, donors, university administrators and students over the roots of the song and what it truly symbolizes.
However, the true issue with The Eyes of Texas does not simply lie in how racist the song really is â it is that students are not being listened to by an administration in place to serve students.
Texas State menâs basketball Head Coach Terrence Johnson was named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year along with junior guard Mason Harrell and junior guard Caleb Asberry receiving All-Sun Belt honors.
Harrell was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team while Asberry was named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team. This marks the first conference honors for both players.
Johnson took the helm before the 2020-2021 season after Head Coach Danny Kaspar resigned following accusations of racism. Johnson has since led the Bobcats to an 18-7 overall record (12-3 in the conference) and a Sun Belt Conference regular-season title, the teamâs first conference championship since 1999.

The Sun Belt ranks dead last in the country in blowout percentage and is fourth in close game percentage, meaning this league is as competitive as it gets.
Texas State, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana all earned byes to the quarterfinals, but there were four other teams fighting for those in the final weekend, not including unanimous preseason favorite Little Rock.
There’s talent up and down the board in this league, so expect the close games to continue, and some great March action in Pensacola.
