Danny Gilbert named chair for Dan Murphy’s inquiry

Gilbert + Tobin managing partner Danny Gilbert will chair an independent panel review into the proposal to develop a Dan Murphy’s retail outlet in Darwin.
The review was announced in mid-December by Woolworths Group into Endeavour Group’s move to develop a Dan Murphy’s store in Darwin, and will be responsible for providing a report to the Woolworths board about the adequacy and nature of stakeholder engagement relevant to the Darwin Dan Murphy’s development, including with respect to public health concerns, the extent to which stakeholder concerns were factored into decision-making, and best practices as they may apply to the supply and sale of alcohol from the proposed Darwin Dan Murphy’s development, particularly as it impacts the lives and best interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The nation’s poverty rate is seeing the highest increase in more than half a century, according to new research released this week.
That study comes from economists Bruce Meyer, of the University of Chicago, and James Sullivan, of the University of Notre Dame.
The substantial increase translates into eight million more Americans, including two million children, falling under that poverty line since this summer.

Supermarket and drinks giant Woolworths has been given the green light to build the controversial Dan Murphyâs outlet in Darwin despite continued opposition from local Indigenous community groups.
On Friday, the Northern Territoryâs Director of Liquor Licensing said it would approve the application from Woolworthsâ subsidiary, Endeavour Group, to build the cityâs largest Dan Murphyâs store within walking distance of cityâs biggest Aboriginal community in Bagot.

Aboriginal and community groups have expressed deep disappointment at the Northern Territory’s decision to approve a Dan Murphy’s alcohol “megastore” in Darwin.
They said the process was “stacked against community” concerns about the health impacts of alcohol and it amounted to “corporate wilful blindness” by parent company Woolworths.
But Woolworths – through a spokesman for its subsidiary Endeavour Group, which operates Dan Murphy’s – said the store would have the “most stringent set of alcohol control policies anywhere in the country”.
