Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) and Gilbert + Tobin lead graduate hiring blitz in law

Share A handful of Australia’s leading mid-size law firms are ramping up their recruitment of the country’s top graduates as they continue their aggressive push into the top-tier market. At the same time, junior recruitment at most big six legal outfits is lagging behind pre-pandemic levels, despite those firms committing to maintain a pipeline of talent last year, the latest Australian Financial Review Law Partnership Survey revealed. The exception is Allens, which took on 101 graduates, five more than last year and second only to mid-tier behemoth HWL Ebsworth (120). Even with the spectre of the pandemic, the total number of graduates hired across Australia’s 50 biggest law firms grew by 5.7 per cent over the past year to 1325.

Woolworths provides perfect example of why you can t ignore stakeholders

July 2, 2021 Every undergraduate PR student knows from their first semester that understanding stakeholders is essential, yet some big corporations appear to have forgotten that basic principle. An independent report in June castigated Woolworths for failing to properly consider the Aboriginal people of Darwin over a plan to build a widely-opposed giant Dan Murphy’s liquor store within walking distance of three “dry” communities. The review, led by commercial lawyer Danny Gilbert, said Woolworths, and its liquor subsidiary Endeavour, failed in engagement with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities “on the significance of alcohol in the community and the complexities surrounding alcohol abuse”. The 144-page report came out a month after Woolworths had announced it would abandon its plan for the mega-store.
