Dan Murphy s Darwin store axed by Woolworths after review finds failings

Advertisement Supermarket giant Woolworths will not go ahead with building its controversial Dan Murphy’s store in Darwin after an independent review found the company had not sufficiently consulted with Indigenous stakeholders. Woolworths told investors it would axe its plans to build the Darwin’s largest Dan Murphy’s store within walking distance of the city’s biggest Aboriginal community in Bagot. Local Indigenous community groups had likened the decision to Rio Tinto’s destruction of Juukan Gorge. Woolworths has axed its plans to build a Dan Murphy’s store in Darwin. A large part of the review’s focus was on if Woolworths had sufficiently addressed local concerns about the site.

Woolworths scraps a plan to build NT s largest Dan Murphy s bottle shop after years of protests

A planned Dan Murphy s megastore in Darwin has been scrapped by owners Woolworths after months of protests by Indigenous leaders who claimed the move put profits before the community.  The Dan Murphy s megastore at Darwin Airport has been in the sights of the local Danila Dilba Health Service, which launched legal action last month. The group objected to the Northern Territory government s decision to approve the bottle shop - which would have been the largest in the NT - and demanded the accompanying liquor licence be revoked. The decision, which came as a relief to Aboriginal health groups, came after a panel commissioned by Woolworths to review the decision found the company did not do enough consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. “This has been exhausting for everybody and certainly for people who aren’t terribly well resourced. I guess what it shows is that sometimes sanity will prevail,” Danila Dilba Aboriginal health service chief executive, Olga Havnen, said.
