LONGVIEW, Texas A local UPS driver was honored by the Longview Fire Department for saving the life of a family during a fire.
On May 3, around 8 p.m., Daniel Carmical was delivering a package in the 100 block of Primrose Lane and saw fire and smoke coming from the roof of a nearby house.
Carmical broke into the house and rescued homeowner, Ben Slater, who was asleep. (He) yelled UPS and I thought, wow they re really delivering their packages on point now, Slater said. But anyways, he said, Is anybody in here. because your house is on fire.

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - A doorbell camera captured video of a quick-thinking UPS delivery driver running across the street to a neighborâs house to warn its occupant that his home was on fire. UPS driver Daniel Carmical said he was not on his traditional route.
âIâm in Liberty City now. I havenât been over there in a year and a half, and it was a small amount of deliveries I had just in that one strip of Pine Tree Road. There was no point in me being over there,â he said. âI believe it was Godâs will that had me over there on Monday afternoon. Iâm glad I could help them.â

LONGVIEW, Texas Ben and Kateland Slater have both lived in Longview for most of their lives and while they knew the community was supportive during times of need, they didn t realize the impact until during their own crisis.
Monday, May 3, Ben was home alone laying down when around 8 p.m. he heard someone kick in his front door. (He) yelled UPS and I thought, wow they re really delivering their packages on point now, he said. But anyways, he said, Is anybody in here. because your house is on fire.
The
Longview Fire Department received a call after 8 p.m. in the evening on Monday, May 3. There was report of a fire at a Longview home at 106 W. Primrose Lane. They arrived on the scene with 3 fire engines, 2 ladder trucks, 1 ambulance and 4 support vehicles for a total of 21 personnel.

When they arrived, they saw fire emanating from the roof. They were able to access the attic where they found fire and thick smoke.
The
Longview Fire Department s Facebook page reports that it appears the fire started in the wall of the laundry room from which it travelled up to the attic. There was one person in the home who was asleep.
