As dawn broke, burning away the cold mist, veterans gathered in the Hervey Bay RSL.
Here, they chatted with old mates and remembered those who didnât make it through to this or any other Anzac Day.
It came after the march from the Hervey Bay RSL to Freedom Park where hundreds gathered for the dawn service on Sunday.
Vietnam Veteran and Point Vernon resident Larry Smith told the Chronicles he was âsurprised how many people turned up.â
âNot just (veterans) but kids and families,â he said
âThere was this one young family with two kids, the parents were both wearing medals so thatâs a good sign the tradition is going to keep (running),â Mr Smith said.

COURTESY OF HOFSTRA ATHLETICS
The buzz around the Hofstra men’s lacrosse program has been around Ryan Tierney, and rightfully so. The senior has 48 points through eight games so far in 2021, showcasing more than a few highlight-reel goals.
Tierney could be the key to a Colonial Athletic Association title for the Pride, but this team is much more than its star player and that was on display in Friday night’s matchup with UMass. Tierney chipped in three goals and three assists, but it was the efforts on one of his teammates that proved vital.
Justin Lynskey is a problem for UMass.
Lynskey scored the game-winner to give No. 18 Hofstra a 12-11 victory and key CAA result against the Minutemen.
Lynskey grabbed a rebound, fought through the UMass defense and scored between the goalie’s legs while taking a hit with just under seven minutes left, giving Hofstra the late lead. Two minutes later, he scored again while taking some UMass assault, finishing a Ryan Tierney pass back-handed for what became the game-winner.
Hofstra moved to 6-2, 3-1 in the CAA, coming back to overtake the Minutemen and then hold off a push late.
Lynskey had three goals and two assists, and Tierney put up six points (3G, 3A). Riley Forte (3G, 1A) and Justin Sykes (1G, 1A) had key days offensively, while Brian Herber won 18-of-26 draws.
