Letter: Time for change as Shelton mayor, aldermen undercut school budget yet again June 4, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail To the Editor: A few weeks ago, I wrote a letter to the editor to implore our BOE members to work in a bipartisan fashion to build a 2021-22 school system budget that was conservative, fair and sensitive to the needs of our student body during this unprecedented time. They did just that. They worked together along with central office leadership to create a budget that was realistic and balanced supporting the needs of the school system. That budget was presented to the Board of Apportionment and Taxation and the Board of Aldermen with the hope that the school system’s needs would be addressed in a budget eventually approved by the mayor.

Great. So, you’ll all save about $96 on your tax bill this year, but the teacher’s contract will not be funded so we will probably see more staff cuts for the fourth year in a row. Remember that when the teachers’ salary contract was being negotiated, John Anglace, president of the Board of Aldermen, was participating in the negotiations. He approved the contract, and called the mayor to make sure that the mayor approved the contract as well, which he did. And yet, when the superintendent and the chair of the Board of Education came before the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Apportionment and Taxation and explained that they needed a minimum allocation of $1.179 million to cover the costs of that contract this ye
