NY strikes $1 1B settlement with 3 major opioid distributors

ALBANY – Three major drug distributors will pay up to $1.2 billion to settle claims they contributed to the ongoing opioid crisis in New York, state Attorney General Letitia James announced Tuesday. McKesson Corporation, Cardinal Health Inc. and Amerisource Bergen Drug Corporation all agreed to the major settlement in exchange for being released from an ongoing jury trial against opioid distributors and manufacturers, which is currently underway in Suffolk County and expected to take months to complete. The agreement calls for the three companies to pay a combined $1.2 billion over the next 17 years, with payments beginning in two months, according to the state Attorney General s Office.

Some lawmakers are calling on New York City to follow Los Angeles in reinstating a mask mandate for vaccinated people as the highly contagious delta variant fuels a fourth wave of COVID-19 nationally. But Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday resisted the mounting pressure to once again require mask wearing in indoor settings, citing the ongoing effort to boost vaccinations that have proven highly effective at preventing severe illness and death caused by coronavirus infections. “Masks have value, unquestionably. But masks are not going at the root of the problem, vaccination is,” he said during a media briefing. “We do not intend to mask mandate,” he added. “We do intend to double down on vaccination.”
