TIER raises GDP growth forecast to 5.03%

The Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台灣經濟研究院) yesterday raised its economic growth forecast for the nation to 5.03 percent, citing a global economic recovery, which it said would boost the nation’s exports and domestic demand.
That represented an increase of 0.73 percentage points from its forecast in January and is the first to forecast growth of more than 5 percent.
The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics in late February forecast that GDP would grow 4.64 percent this year, while the central bank last month projected a 4.53 percent increase.

Taipei, April 23 (CNA) The Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) on Friday raised its forecast for Taiwan s 2021 gross domestic product (GDP) growth to 5.03 percent, citing a global economic recovery, which it said is expected to boost the country s exports and domestic demand.
The revised GDP growth forecast was a 0.73 percentage point increase from TIER s previous estimate in January and the first to exceed 5 percent.
In late February, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics forecast a 4.64 percent GDP growth for 2021, while the central bank in mid-March projected a 4.53 percent increase.

It seems like every day, the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage continues to get worse.
For example, yesterday we wrote that Taiwan Semiconductor was now warning that the global chip shortage may extend into next year, following comments we had reported on in early April suggesting that prices would rise for the rest of 2021.
Now, the issue looks to be shifting to a shortage of chipmaking equipment, according to Nikkei. Delivery times for some chipmaking tools have grown to 12 months or more as a result of the supply crunch now spreading “so far that it is rebounding onto the chipmaking industry itself,” the report says.
