Toronto-based Data On Tap, the company behind upstart carrier ‘dotmobile,’ received CRTC approval to become Canada’s first full Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).
Dotmobile completed registration with the CRTC as a proposed full MVNO in September 2019. Since then, the company launched a public alpha of its dotmobile smartphone app and gained nearly 10,000 founding members. Additionally, Data On Tap actively participated in the CRTC’s wireless industry review.
For those unfamiliar with MVNOs, a full MVNO operates on basically the same technology as a traditional mobile network operator but doesn’t own the radio access network (cell towers). Instead, a full MVNO offers a core network that connects to one or more existing radio access networks, kind of like roaming on another carrier’s network.
