“I couldn’t agree more that this money would be far better served in the classroom dealing with the students,” board member Tory Babcock said, adding that it would nice to have a fifth person in the event of a divided board.
Board member Jose Juan Ibarra agreed with his colleagues’ statements, adding that a provisional appointment makes “total sense.”
One member of the public urged the board to choose the election option.
“Please let the taxpayers, parents and registered voters of the community vote on the board member to fill the vacancy on the board,” Tonya Crandall wrote. “Please do not choose to appoint another board member.”

Dr. John Baeke
Baeke made his announcement during a Thursday night meeting and posted his resignation letter to his website, drbaekeforschoolboard.org.
He reportedly is relocating out of state due to his job.
“Several months ago, I was presented the opportunity of working for a large health-care organization in a capacity that would allow me to practice both as clinician and medical director,” he wrote.
“My current capacity as staff plastic surgeon for Lompoc Valley Medical Center has been one of the most rewarding positions I have ever held as a physician, and my expectation was that I would finish my career there.

During a meeting Wednesday night, district trustees voted 4-1 to hire Omaha-based McPherson & Jacobson LLC to guide the search. Board president Jan Clevenger and members Tory Babcock, Jose Ibarra and Stephen Luke voted for the action, with trustee John Baeke in dissent.
Current Superintendent Scott Cory submitted his resignation March 22 after eight years on the job. He did not disclose what or where his new position is.
A committee of two board members recommended McPherson & Jacobson, which has a Sacramento office due its affiliation with the California School Boards Association a connection Clevenger called “a feather in their cap.”
