In 2012, I was working at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, when I met an Afghan colleague who was helping me with an IT problem. He was in his early 20s and was responsible for providing for his family and younger siblings, which was made possible by his job at the embassy. After recounting his experiences during the Taliban era, including extreme poverty and the killing of family members, he said, “May God never bring them back.” That statement, and the look on his face, is forever seared in my memory.
