Stop Zambia’s digital squeeze
COMMENT
Zambia’s August 2021 elections are on the horizon. The 2016 polls were closely contested despite widespread irregularities. These have been difficult years for citizens. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, spiralling debt and inflation resulted in rising living costs and contributed to underfunded public services.
Progress in advancing sustainable development is being undermined as a result.
Against this backdrop, we in the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) expect to face the usual obstacles in our fight for a free and fair election. We will probably face the physical restrictions and obstructions used to prevent our campaigning abilities.

The decision follows an analysis of the market which revealed deficiencies in the quality of services by the current operators and the need to stiffen competition.
ZICTA has announced that it has granted Beeline Telecom Limited a licence to commence mobile phone operations in Zambia.
Beeline Telecom, a Zambian wholly owned company, will be required to commence operation within the next six months failure to which, unless determined otherwise by the Authority, the licence will be revoked.
Currently, the mobile service operators include South African telecoms MTN, Airtel and local telecoms firm Zamtel. The local company has been offered the international network and national services licences with associated resources and becomes the fourth mobile network services provider in the country.

LUSAKA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) Zambia s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) regulator on Friday said that it has given a local firm a license to commence mobile phone services operations.
The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) said it has awarded Beeline Telecoms Limited to become the country s fourth mobile phone service operator.
Patrick Mutimushi, the regulator s director-general said the award of the license follows an analysis of the market which revealed deficiencies in the quality of services by the current operators and the need to stiffen competition.
In 2018, the regulator awarded UZI Zambia, a unit of Unitel International Holdings B.V, registered in the Netherlands a license to commence operations but it was revoked in 2020 after failure to start operations.
