Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 5) As the coronavirus turns the world upside down, the Philippines despite being a regional AI laggard is taking a giant leap of faith: An ambitious AI venture.
Trade officials launched on Wednesday an AI roadmap that charts the country’s journey towards becoming what they describe as a “big data processing hub” that provides “high-value data analytics and AI services to the world.”
From precision farming that cuts food spoilage, to driverless cars and intelligent sensors in factories, to disease modelling, drug discovery and COVID-19 contact tracing, AI or artificial intelligence may be the key to solving today’s nagging problems of society.

The Cybersecurity Bureau of the
Department of Information and Communications Technology on Wednesday released recommendations on how the public can protect themselves on social media.
The bureau said social media users should not take the bait if they see footage being promoted online with the words “exclusive,” “shocking” or “sensational.”
The agency added that if it sounds too outlandish, “it’s probably a scam.”
Online users are also advised to be careful whenever they see shortened website links as it could be a disguise for a malicious link containing malware or a virus.

China s phone market boomed in the first quarter of this year compared with the big setback caused by the COVID-19 pandemic at the same period last year, with phone shipments reaching 97.97 million units, up 100.1 percent from the same period last year, said the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology on Monday.
In March, a total of 36.09 million phones were shipped, increasing 65.9 percent year-on-year, with 41 newly-released models, up 32.3 percent from a year earlier.
